Alpha vs Theta Brainwaves: Which State Supports Healing?

When we talk about relaxation, meditation and nervous system regulation, two brainwave states often come up: alpha and theta. Both are associated with changes in attention and arousal, but they are not interchangeable, and neither should be thought of as a simple “healing frequency”.

So, what is the difference between alpha and theta brainwaves, and which state is better for healing?

What are alpha brainwaves?

Alpha brainwaves generally fall between 8 and 13 Hz. They are commonly observed when you are awake but relaxed, particularly with your eyes closed. Alpha is often described as a state of relaxed alertness. You are not deeply asleep or disengaged from your surroundings, but your brain is no longer working as hard to analyse, plan and respond.

Recent research supports this association. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found that increased alpha activity was associated with several measures of relaxation, although the relationship varied depending on where activity was measured and how relaxation was assessed.

For nervous system work, this can make alpha an interesting state to cultivate. It may provide enough calm for the body to move out of high alert while maintaining awareness of what is happening internally and externally.

What are theta brainwaves?

Theta brainwaves are slower, generally around 4-8Hz. They are associated with drowsiness, the transition towards sleep, dreaming and some forms of meditation and inward-focused attention.

Theta activity can also appear during mindfulness practices. A systematic review of EEG research found that mindfulness was commonly associated with increased alpha and theta activity, although the findings were not completely consistent across studies.

Theta, therefore, may accompany a deeper shift away from active problem-solving and towards internal awareness. For some people, this can feel like a quieter, more spacious state in which thoughts, memories, sensations or emotions become more noticeable.

But more theta does not automatically mean more healing.

Alpha vs theta: which is better for healing?

The answer is: neither is inherently better.

Healing and regulation are not dependent on reaching a particular brainwave frequency. The nervous system is constantly changing, and healthy functioning involves flexibility between different states rather than remaining in one state.

Alpha may be particularly useful when you want to cultivate calm awareness, for example, during mindful movement, breath awareness or body-based observation.

Theta may become more prominent as you move towards deeper relaxation and inward attention, including meditation or the transition towards sleep.

Interestingly, research suggests that alpha and theta can occur together during mindfulness. Rather than competing states, they may represent different aspects of a broader shift towards relaxed, internally oriented attention.

The goal isn’t to chase a brainwave

For somatic and nervous system practices, the more useful question may not be “Am I in alpha or theta?”

Instead, ask: Can I notice what is happening in my body without immediately trying to change it? Can I become more aware without becoming overwhelmed? Can my system move between activation and rest with greater flexibility?

That is a more meaningful measure of regulation than trying to force the brain into a particular frequency.

Alpha and theta can both be part of relaxed, inward-focused states. But the real goal isn’t a number on an EEG. It is developing greater awareness, flexibility and capacity to respond to what your body is communicating.
